A Message from Amber Valley Rugby Union FC Volunteer Coordinator

Published on Thursday 5 May 2016

"Providing facility’s to enable us to be battered senseless every week isn’t easy. Through the closed season as a club we have to raise funds, recruit players, carry out maintenance to the club house and repair the pitches. On top of all this we must remember to socialize as a group and make the most of our club whilst recuperating.

Last year’s closed season was a huge success with lots of volunteers coming forward for most of the events. My particular favourite was Rugby Force with around 60 people helping out, most of these for both days, we managed to far exceed our targets and everybody had a great time doing it too. The feeling of camaraderie after that event was fabulous.

The club is run on a purely voluntary basis and without your help the club would struggle to survive. With that in mind I am writing to all members to let them know about some of the upcoming events that raise funds and awareness of the club in the wider community.

The first ever EYUP MI DUCK festival kicks off the season on the 6th and 7th May. For this we need bar staff (indoor and out) kitchen staff for breakfasts and snacks, glass collectors / washers and general tidy uppers and trouble shooters. Any one that can help should contact Karen, Lisa or Gareth.

Following the Bob Whitfield Memorial Game and the club dinner on the 14th May we have the Minis and juniors presentation on the 21st with the Annual General Meeting the day after (22nd May).

The Cowpat Rally is on 24th to 26th of June this year. Volunteers will be needed around the clock for bar work, cleaning, cooking and general dogsbody duties. This is our biggest event of the year therefore it is very important to have enough volunteers to cope from the setup on Thursday 23rd to the end of the event on Sunday 26th Please contact Karen or Gareth for more information.

July 2nd is Nat West Rugby Force day at Amber Valley. This year we are using the funding from the RFU and Nat West to install a studwork partition and door part way down the corridor near the showers to give a little more privacy to our ladies team, we are also planning to replace the doors and re paint the changing rooms. Of course there are many other jobs to do and the more helpers we get the more we can achieve. Contact Bob Toth to offer help.

We are having a Family Fun Day on 16th July. To promote the club and generally have a good time. Details are still to be worked out but help will be needed to cook burgers, pull pints and generally keep things running smoothly. Please contact Julie Belfield or Gareth to offer your services.

On 6th and 7th of August the club is to provide personnel to look after the gates at Cromford Steam Rally. This earns much needed funds for the club. Anybody that volunteers will get free entry for their family and free overnight camping. Last year we were a little short of help on Saturday morning until the cavalry arrived, more help would be appreciated. Please contact a committee member to volunteer.

From Friday 26th to Sunday 28th of August we play host to the Brothers over the Hill Annual Festival. This is a similar event to the Cowpat Rally with all of the same needs from volunteers. Any committee member will be happy to accept your offer of help.

The day to day running of your rugby club is also time consuming, it would be great to have more people helping out with regular tasks like kitchen duties, mowing, line marking, cleaning, bar work and the many other jobs done on a regular basis.

Last years closed season was a great success, now let’s get out there and SMASH IT!

Bob Toth - Volunteer coordinator AVRUFC
