National Mills weekend and Tractors

Published on Friday 29 April 2016

It's a big weekend at Heage Windmill on May 14/15! It's National Mills weekend, organised* by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), when our wind mill will be one of the hundreds of wind and water mills throughout the country which will open their doors to visitors, many of which are not normally accessible to the public. The theme this year is  ‘Vintage Power ‘ and so ,apart from our 220 year old mill, on Sunday we are welcoming dozens of vintage tractors – old power in plenty indeed! They have been so popularly received in previous years and are brought together through the efforts of John Allsop, of Belper, who arranges for them to come. They have mostly been beautifully restored and although many of them are more than 50 years old, will gleam in the bright sunlight we have ordered! As an added bonus, supporting the ‘ Vintage Power’ theme, there will also be a display of stationary steam engines. These devices provided power in many applications, such as farms, before electricity came into common use.

Over the weekend we will also be hosting the  Nuffield  Amateur radio club, from Derby, who will try and contact other radio clubs at  mills throughout the UK and indeed the World.

Weather permitting, at Heage we are also  planning a giant bric-a-brac sale and all funds from this will go to our ongoing   Mill repairs programme.
