Swanwick cat shelter releases 2016 calendar

Published on Tuesday 1 December 2015

EVERY day is “Caturday” at Woodland Nook Cat Rescue in Swanwick - and now it can be for you, too, following the release of the shelter’s 2016 calendar.

The calendar features 44 cats and kittens who have all been resident at the Delves Bank Road shelter in the past 12 months.

The images - all taken by shelter volunteers - feature some real characters, such as Loulou, who came from Crete and loved playing in the shelter’s drinking fountain, and one-eyed Bob, whose favourite pastime while at Woodland Nook was chasing pens.

Most of the cats on the calendar have gone on to find loving homes, but a few remain, including Ruby and Azazel, black and white siblings who have been at the shelter for more than a year.

But many more cats and kittens have arrived Woodland Nook since the calendar went to press.

In fact, shelter owner Jane Lynegar, who is currently developing a luxury boarding cattery in her back garden, has had to open up some of the cattery rooms early to accommodate a recent influx of cats and kittens.

“I’ve never known it so busy,” said Jane. “But when faced with terrible stories of neglect, or threats of cats being put to sleep, I simply can’t turn them away. This puts the shelter under enormous strain, as it costs so much to feed them all.”

It’s already an expensive time of year for any animal shelter, with the winter weather resulting in higher heating bills, and purchasing the calendar is one way you can help.

The glossy A4 calendar costs £10, including UK postage (£8.50 if you can collect), and can be purchased via the shelter’s blog, woodlandnook.blogspot.co.uk, or by calling Jane on 07941 806536.

Fund-raising is always at the top of the Woodland Nook agenda and a recent Christmas event raised an impressive £1,620. But raising money has become even more urgent recently as it has become apparent that essential repairs to the shelter are likely to cost more than £3,000.

Woodland Nook is a unique bungalow-style shelter, where the cats are free to roam both indoors and outside in an enclosed garden. It is funded entirely by donations and run by a dedicated team of volunteers.
