Vintage Tractors at Heage Windmill
Sunday, May 22, and yet again favourable weather gave this event a great start. I counted over 60 tractors and in addition there were steam-driven exhibits, including the magnificent 'Queen Mary' Traction Engine and a steam-driven Steam Road Roller.
I remember these in my youth rolling the tarmac, but by then they were all diesel engines. In one area there was a collection of 'barn engines' working away, and further down nearer the mill was fire-fighting equipment.
Hundreds of visitors came, including many families with younger children, and with ice cream and refreshments available from the Visitor Centre and the Burger Van being as popular as ever refreshment needs were well covered.
The Bric a Brac and Tombola added a festive feel and attracted prospective buyers. There was a miniature steam engine giving rides and as always tractor owners welcomed everybody, especially the children. The use of the neighbouring field for car parking made access so much easier and less congested. Many thanks to Richard Hallas.
Meanwhile the guides were doing sterling work, taking tours round the mill, and Miller Tim was demonstrating the control of the sails and occasionally having to start them by pushing as the wind was not strong. The Mill Tours are so appreciated by visitors and help give us our 'Hall of Fame' status.
A wonderful family day out and many thanks to all the tractor and steam exhibitors, the mill volunteers and the enthusiastic visitors, and to John Allsop, the organiser.

The windmill will be open during 2022 (11-00am to 4-00pm) every weekend from
April 2nd until the end of October.
Admission Charges for 2022
Adults £5-00 Concessions, incl Gold Card £4-00, Children (5-16) £3-00 (parents can buy one and get one free for children in the same age group) Children under 5 are free. Organised Adult parties of up to 10 people - £60-00.
