Councillor John Walker elected as Mayor of Alfreton
Councillor John Walker elected as Mayor of Alfreton for the municipal year 2022/23
It is the sixth time he has taken the role of civic head of the Town Council, Councillor Walker was recently bereaved by the death of his wife Angela, at a time when he was Deputy Mayor. He agreed to take up the mayoralty with the widespread backing of fellow councillors at the annual meeting.
He said: "I am surprised but delighted and I have the support of my family. "It will be a hectic time with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and with many events around that. We are having a beacon and I will be lighting it to honour her."
At many civic events, he will be accompanied by one of his sons Scott or Matthew, his daughter-in-law Kimberley or his grandson Jacob, who is aged 15. Councillor Walker has been appointed Alfreton Mayor in 1992, 1996, 2003, 2013 and 2017, he has also served three times as Mayor of the borough of Amber Valley.
The beacon lighting takes place on Thursday June 2nd from 7:30pm at Alfreton Park Community School, which has recently opened.
On the following day, the Mayor will be at St Martin's Church at 2pm for a thanksgiving service. This will also be attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill CBE.
On Saturday June 4th , there will be an event entitled Party in the Town, which will feature local bands performing on stage at Alfreton House 2pm – 9pm.
The jubilee celebrations end on Sunday June 5th with a Royal Teddy Bears' Picnic in Alfreton Park 11am - 5pm hosted by Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline followed by a band performing that evening, 7pm at the cricket club.
