Midland Railway Trust Awarded Accreditation Accoldae

Published on Saturday 19 March 2022

The Midland Railway Trust, which operates the Midland Railway – Butterley, Ripley, Derbyshire, is proud to announce that it has become an Accredited Museum.

It offers heritage train journeys and has a large Museum Complex which visitors are encouraged to explore. It holds a vast collection of objects related to the Midland Railway and its predecessors and successors, and celebrates Derby as a centre of railway engineering excellence. Its annual events programme welcomes families, enthusiasts, specialist groups, schools’ visits and researchers.

Administered by Arts Council England on behalf of the UK Accreditation Partnership, Accreditation is the benchmark for well-run Museums and Galleries.

It means that the Midand Railway – Butterley is properly managed and governed to the nationally agreed industry standard and shows the museum takes proper care of its collections, sharing them with visitors and keeping them safe for future generations.

Accreditation opens up exciting funding opportunities, allows museums to host touring exhibitions and gives access to professional advice and support. It also gives confidence to donors and sponsors who may wish to support the museum in preserving heritage and inspiring future generations.

Accreditation covers museums of all types and sizes - from the smallest volunteer-run museums to national museums – and more than 1,700 museums are currently taking part in the scheme across the UK.

Chris Deeth, Senior Museum Volunteer, said:

“We are delighted and proud to have achieved Accreditted status. A small team of Trust volunteers have worked on the project to achieve this over the last 5 years. We

have been so grateful for the support of our Accreditation Mentor, Hazel Crozier, College Curator, RAF College Cranwell; Museum Development East Midlands; Derby Museums Trust and members of the Derbyshire Museum and Heritage Forum. We must also thank the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a grant which pump primed the initial development of this project. Finally we must acknowledge the work of those volunteers who have gone before us, who developed the Museum Collection and set up a system on which we have been able to build.”

Liz Johnson, Director Museums and Cultural Property at Arts Council England said: "We’re delighted that the Midland Railway Trust has been successful in gaining their Accreditation status. This means that their Collections will be looked after and maintained offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.”
