Officers in Heage and Belper get Scooter Smart

Published on Friday 22 May 2015

Officers at Heage and Belper Town are the latest Safer Neighbourhood team members across Derbyshire to join the Scooter Smart initiative to encourage local school pupils to make more active and safer journeys to school.

PC Andrea Smith from the Heage Safer Neighbourhood Team and PC Lorna Dashfield from the Belper Town beat visited 100 children at St John’s Church of England Primary School on Laund Nook in Belper on Tuesday, May 19, alongside Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Officer, Rob Bounds.

The children worked with officers to learn more about the Scooter Smart Code and practiced their skills of control and stopping whilst thinking how to apply these to real life situations where they need to look out for other pedestrians and vehicles on their journey to school.

The Scooter Smart initiative is part of the Modeshift STARS award scheme in partnership with Derbyshire County Council and also contributes towards schools achieving the national Modeshift STARS award which recognises the efforts school make to encourage alternative ways of travelling to help reduce traffic congestion on the school run.

PC Dashfield said: “It was great to get involved with such a successful project and meet local youngsters who had fun with their friends and fellow students whilst picking up really important safety advice for when they are out and about.

“It was also nice to get to know the pupils and introduce ourselves so they feel comfortable around us and when we are out on the beat they can come and say hello.”

Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Officer, Rob Bounds, added: “To date, 10 Safer Neighbourhood teams across the county have worked with 17 schools to help deliver the initiative to just over 2000 pupils. The partnership with Safer Neighbourhood officers is invaluable in helping to reinforce the Scooter Smart code with local schools as well as helping to contribute towards the Modeshift award scheme.”
