Derbyshire police retains charter mark for dedication to helping deaf community

Published on Sunday 26 April 2015

Derbyshire Constabulary has retained its national charter mark in recognition of the force’s ongoing work to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The ‘Louder Than Words’ charter is awarded to organisations across the country that demonstrate a dedication to meeting the needs of the deaf community.

It is given out by Action on Hearing Loss, which campaigns on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing people.

To achieve the charter mark, organisations must meet ten rigorous standards, including staff training, clear information for deaf people, and deaf awareness policies for staff.

Derbyshire Constabulary is reassessed every year to ensure the commitment to deaf people is ongoing, and has recently retained the charter mark.

The force is also the only one in England and Wales to achieve the Louder Than Words accolade.

Jane Birkin, the force’s outreach officer, said: “This continues to be a very rewarding and exciting piece of work to be involved in and we endeavour to everything we can to build the confidence of our deaf community and staff.

“We are delighted to inform our community that we have passed the re-accreditation for the fourth year running and that we remain committed to improving awareness and services in this area.”

Derbyshire police was originally achieved the award in 2008 and receives annual evidential assessments by Action on Hearing Loss.

The benchmark standards also include having clear information for deaf people about our services, having well-maintained equipment, meeting requests for communication and being aware of the Text Relay service.

As part of its work, the force revamped its website to feature much more information for dead and hard of hearing people, including a video in British Sign Language explaining how to contact police.
