Kilburn officers nominated for local award for work to keep school children safe

Published on Saturday 18 April 2015

Members of Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood Team are feeling “delighted and humbled” after being nominated for a Community Champions award.

PC Neil Hopwell and PCSO John Midgley are up for an award in the Public Service category for their work to encourage safer, more active and environmentally friendly ways of travelling to school.

Head Teacher at Kilburn Infant and Nursery School, Joanne Baillie has nominated the pair after they visited the school to speak to youngsters about roads safety and different ways of getting to and from school including walking, scooting and cycling.

The work is part of national campaign Modeshift Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools (STARS) which aims to tackle the problems caused by parents driving children to school, including parking congestion and the fear of road traffic accidents.

PC Hopwell said: “John and I are delighted and very humbled to be nominated for an award especially for something we are very proud to support and enjoy being a part of.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of school staff, youngsters and parents to promote this important campaign to help make roads around local schools safer for everyone.

“As well as helping to educate children during our visits, we hope to build up a link with them so if they see us out and about on patrol they can stop and say hello.”

Nominations for the Derby Telegraph Community Champions awards close on Wednesday, April 29.
