Opticians take on Race for Life challenge for charity

Published on Friday 15 October 2021

FIVE colleagues at a Belper opticians tackled the Derby Race for Life on Sunday 10 October, raising more than £1200 for a cancer research charity.

Anna Wheatley, Charly Grimwood-Butler and Tara Parkin, all dispensing opticians at Specsavers on King Street, took on the 10-kilometre challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK. Optical advisors Ann-Marie Fletcher and Abby Rogers also joined the Race for Life in Markeaton Park, walking 5 kilometres for the same cause.

‘We had a great day out in Markeaton – the weather held out for us, and it was sunny skies all day! Everyone who ran the 10K completed it in great time, so I’m very proud of their efforts,’ says Ann-Marie. ‘The store raised more than £1200 for Cancer Research, which is well over our target of £500. We couldn’t have done that without our store director Andy McBride who generously donated £500.  We’re really happy that the money will be going towards a cause as important as cancer research and treatment.’

Cancer Research UK works to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, a disease which will affect one in two of us in our lifetimes. The Race for Life runners are still taking donations on their fundraising page, which can be found here: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/ann-maries-race-for-life-317.

In line with guidance from the NHS, Specsavers is keeping safety measures in place, including the wearing of face coverings, unless there is a medical exemption. This includes maintaining social distancing in stores, continuing to use PPE and sanitising all testing equipment and frames before and after each use. Doors will be kept open whenever possible to improve ventilation and although card payments are still preferred, cash payments will be accepted too.

Specsavers will also continue to operate its Ask The Expert chat function on its website and its RemoteCare service, which enable customers to speak to an expert from the comfort of their home via video call or phone.
