Redevelopment of Charles Hill moves closer but final push required to commence the new building
Plans to redevelop the Charles Hill playing fields in Loscoe have moved a step closer following a competitive tender exercise to identify a main contractor. The new building will include team changing rooms, officials changing rooms and a community hall that can be subdivided for hire by smaller groups and used for social activities and meetings. There will be a fully equipped kitchen and bar to provide on-site catering.
Unfortunately, however, although over a million pounds has already been committed to the project there is a shortfall in the capital funding secured to date to be able to commence the build at this time. Funding partners including Amber Valley Borough Council, Heanor and Loscoe Town Council, The Football Foundation and the Charles Hill Centre Community Interest Company (comprising local residents along with Heanor Juniors Football Club and Loscoe AFC) remain committed to bridging the shortfall to get the build back on track as soon as possible.
Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, Cabinet Member for the environment comments: "Unfortunately the impact of the world-wide pandemic has led to pressures on the UK building and construction industry with significant issues with building material supply costs and lead times and shortage of skilled workforce and this has pushed tender prices up. We know that partners and the community will be disappointed by this delay, but we feel that we now need to pull together to raise additional funds to ensure that the original design can be delivered, and this will include applications for grant funding."
Many of the funding bodies, including Sport England, are starting to re-open their grant schemes following a partial shutdown during the pandemic and funding re-focused on Covid recovery projects supporting the survival of sports clubs and community groups rather than new buildings.
Councillor Paul Jones, Leader of Heanor and Loscoe Town Council stated: "whilst this short delay is disappointing the funding partners remain totally committed to finally delivering a new community building on Charles Hill which will be used for generations by the residents of Loscoe and surrounding areas."
Any organisation or local company who would like to offer any financial support towards the final push to re-develop Charles Hill for the long-term use of the local community and sports clubs are encouraged to contact Kirk Monk at the borough council on 01773 841646.
