Derbyshire Wildlife Trust completes its first season of badger vaccinations
Almost eighteen months since the fundraising began and six months since the first badger vaccination in Derbyshire, the vaccination season has come to a close for 2014.
The final badger vaccinations of the year took place earlier this week at two sites in South Derbyshire. Debbie Bailey, lead vaccinator for the Trust supported the newest vaccinator, Liz Oldring. They vaccinated over 75% of the badgers at the sites. “I am delighted to have vaccinated the first badgers in South Derbyshire. Vaccination is a real alternative to culling badgers and we hope to expand the programme further in the south of Derbyshire next year” said Liz Oldring.
Throughout 2014 the Trust has been leading the way in Derbyshire and highlighting the role of badger vaccination as an alternative to badger culling. Vaccinations have taken place in nine different locations and it is estimated that a minimum of 70% of badgers at each site has been vaccinated. Furthermore, at three of the nine sites, 90% of the badgers were vaccinated which is a great start to the five year programme. Extensive field work and hidden cameras around the badger setts provide a good estimate of the numbers of badgers present
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust believes the success has been due to working with multiple partners, including the National Farmers Union, the National Trust, Derbyshire County Council, Buxton Civic Association, private land owners and farmers, The British Mountaineering Council, Derbyshire Badger Groups and the Badger Trust.
Working with so many partners has attracted the attention of the Government and this has resulted in active discussions with them about how Derbyshire Wildlife Trust can access funds from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to expand its vaccination programme in 2015.
“”We have made a very good start to our 5 year badger vaccination programme in Derbyshire. We are leading the way locally and nationally on this important issue and working with multiple partners has been absolutely vital. We believe this programme can be expanded in the future in Derbyshire with the help of the Government and we see no reason why a badger cull should be considered for Derbyshire in the future” said Tim Birch, project leader for the badger vaccination programme with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.
