Police issue advice to help protect Derbyshire residents from cold-callers
Residents in Derbyshire are being encouraged to remain cautious when it comes to cold-callers following suspicious incidents in Derby over the last week.
On Thursday, October 16, officers received a number of reports from concerned residents regarding suspected cold callers in Quarndon, Derby.
Residents reported two men who were seen selling door-to-door separately in the area and visited properties on Burley Lane, Church Road, The Common and Beech Avenue. However it is not yet known at this stage whether the callers were legitimate pedlars.
Following the incidents, police are advising people to remain vigilant and to follow some simple safety tips when dealing with doorstep callers. This includes asking to see the identity card of the caller, and if they are selling goods, to ask for their pedlar’s certificate.
Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: “It is always wise to urge caution when it comes to people turning up unannounced. The best advice to follow to help you stay safe is that if you are not sure who is at your door then don’t open it.
“If someone is at your door on genuine business then they will be understanding and won’t mind you taking your time to make those important checks.
Inspector Dakin added: “We would like to urge residents to remain cautious and to report any suspicious activity to us to help prevent a crime from happening. Trading without a valid pedlar’s certificate is a crime and we will take positive enforcement action against those found not to be legitimate.”
Crime prevention advice includes:
- Never invite a stranger into your home; if they ask to use the toilet, for a drink or to make a call then direct them to the nearest public facilities;
- Question whether you really need the goods or services they are offering and don’t be obliged to buy or sign up to anything on the spot. You may get a better deal if you shop around or get alternative quotes;
- Remember- genuine callers will not mind while you make these checks;
- Keep an eye out for your neighbours and report any suspicious activity to police by noting down any information you have including descriptions of anyone in the area and the details of any vehicles.
