Ripley Neighbourhood Watch Volunteer scoops prestigious award for outstanding service

Published on Wednesday 24 February 2021

A crime prevention volunteer who has dedicated more than thirty years to Neighbourhood Watch has been recognised with a prestigious award from Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa.

Alan Carter, who has been an active member of Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch Association Trust for the past three decades, was presented with the Hardyal Dhindsa Award for Outstanding Community Service during NHW's virtual AGM.

It is the first time the award has been presented and is the second honour to be bestowed on the community champion, who received a Certificate of Merit for his work with Neighbourhood Watch by the Mayor of Ripley in 2019.

Alan, who is now retiring from his role, first joined Neighbourhood Watch over 31 years ago and has continued to be a coordinator in his local watch scheme, Amber Heights, Ripley, throughout his service.

The volunteer ran Ripley and Area Support Group for many years and successfully started numerous schemes in the area and throughout Derbyshire.

In addition, Alan chaired the Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch Association Trust for several years as well as A Division NW when the county had four separate policing divisions. More recently, Alan served as Vice Chair of Derbyshire North Division NW.

Mr Dhindsa said: "I'm immensely proud of the contribution Alan has made to communities across Derbyshire over the past three decades.

"Alan's selfless service has made a huge difference to safety in these areas and brought local people together to share their concerns and work proactively to solve any issues.

"Neighbourhood Watch is a valuable part of community life and not only keeps local people connected with the police, but also reduces fear of crime and encourages people to take a proactive role in their safety.

"Alan is a shining example of a volunteer and fully deserves to receive my inaugural Outstanding Community Service Award. I would like to wish him a wonderful retirement."

Alan Carter said: "I was pleasantly surprised and honoured to be presented with the Hardyal Dhindsa's Award for Outstanding Community Service. During my time with Neighbourhood Watch I am pleased to have supported many Watches in the Amber Valley area to bring together many communities and help reduce crime in our neighbourhoods. I hope Neighbourhood Watch continues to thrive to improve people's lives and bring communities together."
