Exciting new play area for Laund Nook Recreation Ground, Belper

Published on Wednesday 27 January 2021

Children can look forward to new and hugely improved play facilities at Laund Nook Recreation Ground in Belper, as contractors prepare to start works to replace the old play area later this month.

The new play facilities cater for children of all ages, offering a variety of equipment including; junior and toddler climbing frame, wheelchair friendly roundabout, trim trail, ariel runway, basket swing, play mounds and a dry riverbed. The play area (pictured) will have an open natural feel encouraging young visitors to explore their surroundings.

The new play area and sections of a circular footpath kickstarts the first phase of a master plan to develop the recreation ground into a Community Park for visitors to enjoy.

The overall masterplan was developed in a partnership with the dedicated group, Community Play Spaces (Belper and Milford), working with the borough council and Groundwork Greater Nottingham to make a difference to play and recreational spaces within the local surroundings. The group was delighted to discover that the borough council was able to identify the capital funding of approximately £53,000 to be able to complete the first phases of the project.

Belper Town Council also fully supports the Laund Nook project and has committed further funding of £20,000 towards its completion.

Councillor John McCabe, cabinet member for the environment commented: "I am delighted that the borough council has been able to work with the community group, as well as Groundwork Greater Nottingham and the town council to realise the local aspirations for this site and I’m grateful to those volunteering their time to engage with the local community.

"It is really pleasing to see a new play area which will also significantly improve accessibility and cater for children with a range of abilities. The borough council is committed to the development of public open spaces as it  understands the importance of high-quality open spaces to local communities."
