Lifeline Awarded to Crich Tramway Village

Published on Thursday 13 August 2020

Crich Tramway Village, home to the National Tramway Museum, near Matlock has been thrown a lifeline through three main sources of funding to help it survive the current and future challenges faced by the national Covid19 crisis.

All the Museum’s collections are Designated as being of National importance and as an educational charity, it depends on income from visitors to continue to operate and to maintain its fleet of vintage trams and artefacts.

This income has been severely affected since lockdown, and the organisation was forced to request help from Tramway Museum Society members and the public and apply for much needed funding.

The museum is delighted to announce that it has been successful in securing an award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (The Fund) of £250,000 in emergency funding AND £25,000 from the Amber Valley Borough Council's Local Authority Discretionary Grant fund.

Commenting on the grants and support from the public, Crich Tramway Village’s General Manager, Dr Mike Galer said:

“This money, along with the generous support funding of £41,000 from a member and public appeal, will go a long way in ensuring we are able to continue to stay open for the remains of the summer season and survive the winter ahead.

“We are very grateful to all those who donated money or have paid for entrance since we have re-opened; your help and loyal support is much appreciated.

“We also wish to say a big thank you to all those National Lottery players who have helped to create vital emergency funding and to Amber Valley Borough Council for local support.

“Over 11,000 people have returned to us for a great day-out since we re-opened on the 11th July and we hope to welcome many more people in the months ahead. Stay safe."

Crich Tramway Village continues to open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and weekends, as well as the Bank Holiday Monday on 31st August 2020, with Covid19 guidelines in place to help visitors, volunteers and staff to stay safe.
