New Belper library to open its doors for the first time

Published on Friday 7 August 2020

The new library in Belper will open its doors for the first time next week.

The new library will welcome its first customers on Monday 10 August 2020, with the added bonus that people will be able to browse the shelves for the first time since lockdown when all county libraries were temporarily closed due to the pandemic.

The new £1.7 million library in Derwent Street will replace the library in Bridge Street, and is part of a wider council development which includes a new care centre for older people, the Ada Belfield Centre, next door.

Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Tourism and Culture, Councillor Barry Lewis, said:

“We’re delighted to finally be able to open the doors to our new library in Belper and hope people who visit will agree with us that it’s been worth the wait.

“It is quite unusual for local authorities to be opening new libraries and this demonstrates our commitment to the library service and all that it has to offer to our residents.

“It’s a stunning building which is light, airy and bright with windows along one wall letting the public see into the building and the stock and services on offer. It combines the old and the new, bringing different elements together. It’s modern, the stock is easy to access and there’s a lovely children’s section. It’s definitely worth a visit.

“We have already reopened 13 of our libraries, and from 10 August another 5 including Belper will open up again, and it’s a really positive step that the latest ones to reopen will see a return of customers being able to browse the shelves.

“Our aim is to reopen all 45 libraries across the county when we can safely do so.”

Borrowers can read the schedule for the roll out of all library reopenings to see when their local library is scheduled to reopen if it hasn’t already, and to check when browsing will be reintroduced at their branch.

All customers are being asked to wear face coverings when visiting a library, unless they are in an exempt group, and will also be asked to leave their details as part of the test and trace programme.
