Council on target for carbon neutrality by 2030
Amber Valley Borough Council’s carbon emissions have reduced by over 55% in the past 10 years as it steers towards the goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.
This is one of the findings of a report commissioned as part of the council’s Carbon Reduction Management Plan which followed the declaration of a Climate Change Emergency in July 2019. If measures identified in the report are successfully introduced the council will be absorbing more carbon than it produces by the target of 2030.
Some of the measures to help get the council to neutrality by 2030 include
- More renewable energy - such as Solar PV
- More energy efficiency - such as LED lighting
- Behavioral change in and around the workplace to reduce energy consumption
- Move to electric vehicles using more renewable sourced 'green' energy
The plan also identifies the contribution of the council’s Forest for the Future tree planting programme, which will see 16 hectares of new community woodlands created over the next 5 years. So far 4,806 trees have been planted and by the end of the programme in 2025 some 22,500 should have been planted.
A meeting of the full council will consider the report at its September meeting.
Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, Leader of the Council, said, "There’s a lot of work to do to get there but it’s all doable and I’m proud that the council is playing its part, and working closely with other councils and partners in addressing climate change. With many of the measures producing energy efficiencies, we’ll also be reducing operating costs along the way. It’s a win, win initiative and one we hope other local companies and organisations will recognise and adopt."
