Man arrested following street disorder incident in Somercotes

Published on Thursday 4 June 2020

A 20 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of damage and affray following an incident in Somercotes on Friday evening.

Police received reports about a large group of people who had gathered in the Warwick Road and Nottingham Road areas at around 7pm on Friday 29 May.

Officers attended and engaged with the group, dispersing and moving the majority of the crowd on, but during the incident a small number of individuals targeted a police vehicle, damaging its wing mirror, spitting and throwing beer at it.

The man, who is from the local area, has been questioned and released on police bail while inquiries take place.

Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant James Bowler said: “Anti-social behaviour and disorder is never acceptable because of the negative impact it can have on our community, and during this particular time large gatherings go against government guidance to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus.

“The majority of the group were dispersed but there was a small number of individuals who behaved anti-socially. Investigations are ongoing and appropriate action will be taken where necessary.”

Sgt. Bowler added: “We would like to hear from anyone we have not yet spoken to who may have witnessed the incident, or have any information which could help with our inquiries.”
