Chatsworth Shows Derbyshire Spirit To Help Nhs Staff

Published on Thursday 14 May 2020

Chatsworth Estate has teamed-up with Derbyshire County Council to offer free accommodation to frontline NHS staff to support them in their roles and help them isolate from vulnerable family.

Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Barry Lewis has agreed with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire to support the offering of three Chatsworth holiday cottages free of charge to NHS workers. This follows on from Councillor Lewis offering his own holiday cottages in Belper to NHS workers for the same purpose.

The county council’s role will be to assist with the booking process and verify that those applying to use the Chatsworth properties, which are located on the Chatsworth Estate, work for the NHS.

Councillor Lewis said: “This is an extremely tough time for all frontline NHS staff, but particularly those with the added worry of living with someone who is vulnerable.

“I’m proud to have played a very small part in helping NHS staff by offering my holiday cottages for free to allow them to isolate from their loved ones – and when the Duke and Duchess offered to take the same approach, the county council was more than happy to assist.

“This is just one of the many examples of how the Derbyshire Spirit has come shining through at this difficult time. I’ve been humbled by stories of people throughout our county coming together and going the extra mile to help friends, family, neighbours and strangers. These have been challenging days and weeks, but I’ve no doubt that together, we’ll come through it.”

Frontline NHS staff who need to isolate from members of their household or be closer to their workplace to accommodate shift patterns can apply to stay in one of the cottages by sending an email from their NHS email address to derbyshirespirit@derbyshire.gov.uk with their name and the organisation they work for. The county council will liaise with the NHS to verify they are an NHS employee.

The Duke and Duchess’s son, Lord Burlington said: “It’s wonderful to be able to share these holiday cottages with NHS staff who aren’t able to go home and be with their families safely. I hope that for these members of the amazing Derbyshire NHS team, the holiday cottages will become a welcome home from home.”
