Appeal to help local businesses falling through support gaps

Published on Friday 8 May 2020

Gaps in the government’s COVID business grant schemes, which are adversely affecting small businesses in Amber Valley, have been highlighted by the borough council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, Councillor Ben Bellamy.

Councillor Bellamy, who is also Deputy Leader of the Council, has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, highlighting examples of local businesses missing out on financial support through technicalities, and asking that eligibility criteria are loosened.

Commented Councillor Bellamy: "Having spoken to many local businesses in recent days it has become apparent that there are some significant gaps that will see decent businesses fold, whereby all rules of fairness they should be eligible for grants.

"I would strongly urge some changes to the scheme, and a loosening of the criteria. I would also urge a review of the £51,000 rateable value limit, with perhaps consideration to extending the scheme based on businesses with a single location, rather than the rateable value."

"Our team has been working extremely hard to ensure that we have a local economy to go back to. Since my letter the government has said it is to allocate additional funding, which will hopefully allow us to plug some of the gaps, but we await the details."

"One thing is sure. The people of Amber Valley will work together to pull through. I am immensely proud of our small businesses that provide the jobs and services that are the lifeblood of our area."
