Charity donates 2,000 facemasks to keep Derbyshire police officers safe

Published on Thursday 7 May 2020

A Derby-based charity has come to the aid of frontline police officers and staff responding to the Covid-19 pandemic by donating 2,000 face masks and to keep them safe.

The Geoff Capes Foundation, which raises funds to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people by providing opportunities to participate in sport and other leisure activities, supplied the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in gratitude for the work of frontline police workers in the crisis.

National shortages of PPE have left many frontline organisations struggling to source the equipment they need to protect their staff from infection.

On hearing about the pressures, the Foundation's founder Manny Bassi was compelled to act and acquired a delivery of 2,000 surgical facemasks which he kindly donated to the Force.

Sandeep Dhadli, a trustee of The Geoff Capes Foundation, said: "As soon as Manny heard the news about the pandemic, he was incredibly determined to help in any way possible. Hearing the news about frontline staff risking their own lives to protect us all without basic PPE was really hard-hitting.

"It would be inhumane to sit back and let this happen without trying to help. Manny immediately got in touch with suppliers for PPE and ordered as much as possible to try and protect frontline staff."

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa added: "We are immensely grateful to The Geoff Capes Foundation for this generous and heartfelt donation.

"The work of our police officers and other frontline workers is critical to prevent the spread of this dreadful disease and they put their lives and the lives of their families at risk every day to keep all of us safe. It is touching that their sacrifices and hard work has been recognised in this way with a contribution of PPE which will help to keep them safe in their daily duties.

"We would like to thank The Geoff Capes Foundation for their support."
