Providing food to sell or give away from home

Published on Thursday 7 May 2020

Amber Valley Borough Council has become aware of a number of households offering, via Facebook and other social media, to sell/give away food prepared in their home kitchens.

The following advice should be followed to ensure the food is prepared both legally and safely.

If you are providing food on a regular and organised basis, or are setting up a food bank, you will need to register with the council. Registration should be completed 28 days prior to trading and this may be done for premises within the borough of Amber Valley at www.ambervalley.gov.uk/business/food-safety/registering-a-new-business.

The Food Standards Agency has produced a booklet for new catering operations. This covers the main things you need to think about when you start catering, including food hygiene issues and more general requirements and is available in a range of languages at www.food.gov.uk/business-guidance/starting-a-food-business.

Preparing food safely is not restricted to thinking about cleanliness, controlling cross contamination and preventing food poisoning, it is also about critical allergens within food and the kitchen environment and that they are are considered and controlled.

It is important that any person supplying food from their home kitchens has sufficient knowledge to do this safely.

If you need any further advice or information please contact the team directly on 01773 841335 or email foodsafety@ambervalley.gov.uk.
