More Funding For Businesses Welcomed

Published on Tuesday 7 April 2020

Extra funding released by the Government to support local small businesses during the coronavirus outbreak was today welcomed by the leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Barry Lewis.

Called Small Business Grant Funding, the one-off grant of £10,000 is designed to help businesses that already pay little or no business rates because of small business rate relief (SBRR), rural rate relief (RRR) and tapered relief.

It is administered by district and borough councils who will be directly contacting local businesses that qualify.

Derbyshire County Council leader Councillor Barry Lewis said he welcomed the news that more cash was being made available to support small businesses.

This latest government support is in addition to the Derbyshire Emergency Relief Fund put in place by the county council with emergency grants of up to £500 for the county’s smallest businesses.

“This is very welcome news,” said Councillor Lewis. “The Derbyshire economy has many small and rural businesses that will be struggling during these difficult times and it’s vital that they get the support they need to survive until this is over.

“Without this money, many small businesses could fold and that would be a disaster for our local economy. By increasing the money available, the Government is helping ensure businesses can survive by helping them with their ongoing business costs during the coronavirus outbreak.”

To qualify, Derbyshire businesses need to:

Businesses that qualify should not have to apply but if they are worried they haven’t heard anything, they are advised to contact their local district or borough council – the council they pay their business rates to.
