Published on Tuesday 31 March 2020

On Thursday 26th March 2020, Richard J Coates, Shirland Golf Club Captain for 2019 donated £5,233.65 to Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) and £5,233.65 to Shirland Golf Club.

Richard J Coates from Shirland Golf Club presented Richard Fletcher, Volunteer Derbyshire Community Representative for DLRAA, with the cheque. The donation came when Richard chose to raise money for the DLRAA and Shirland Golf Club, both of which he is very passionate about, throughout his year as Captain. His aim was to raise enough money to help save 2 lives and help save and improve Shirland Golf Club. Richard started his quest with Captain’s Drive Off in April 2019 and ran a number of events both golfing and social throughout the year to raise funds. On the 1st June 2019 Richard completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in a painstaking but well rewarding time of 11 hours 36 minutes. His Captain's Day on Saturday 13th July was supported by 85 golfers, raising £1,000. The Captain’s Summer Ball and Auction in July was also well attended, raising a further £2,418 on the night. He also arranged live music nights, invitation day, open competitions, an away day, a trip to the dog racing, Christmas party, numerous raffles, sweepstakes and collections. The final event took place on 14th March 2020, a Race Night, taking the grand total raised in excess of £10,000.

Nestled in the foothills of the stunning Amber Valley in Derbyshire, Shirland Golf Club is a picturesque 18 - hole parkland golf course with varying tree-lined holes of elevation and difficulty, providing a great test of your all-round game. Shirland prides itself on providing affordable golf membership for all, with full membership costing just £520 per year. The money raised by Richard will help develop the club and the facilities it can provide to its members and visiting golfers.

Richard Fletcher said: “I was delighted to be part of this fantastic achievement, their passion and support for our service is truly fantastic”. DLRAA relies entirely on donations from members of the public as it receives no Government or National Lottery funding. Therefore, support from people such as Richard Coates and Shirland Golf Club and the visitors really is invaluable and goes a long way to helping to keep our lifesaving service flying and saving lives.” We would like to thank all the group and visitors for the generosity and fantastic support they have given.” DLRAA was formed in 2008 and has carried out more than 17,200 rescue missions and saved many lives in the process, each rescue mission costing on average £1,700 with DLRAA completing on average 5-6 missions every single day, 365 days a year
