We stay at work for you. Please stay home for us and our NHS
“We stay at work for you. Please stay home for us and our NHS” – that’s the message from Derbyshire Police officers.
PCs and PCSOs from across the county are showing support for an online campaign to remind people to #StayHomeSaveLives.
It follows the social media trend of NHS nurses and doctors from different teams pictured holding signs to encourage people to stay home and help ease the pressure on our hospitals and emergency services due to the threat of Coronavirus.
On Monday evening the widest ranging set of directions so far to the British public were set out by the Prime Minister to counter the spread of the virus.
Across the world the virus has claimed the lives of thousands of people – leaving parents, children, grandchildren and friends mourning the deaths of loved ones. It is an unprecedented crisis that has forced us to put in place unprecedented measures in order to save lives.
Staff across the NHS, one of the best health services in the world, are seeing on a daily basis the devastating impact that the coronavirus is having and they are asking one simple thing – where at all possible stay at home.
People should limit their movements as much as possible and only leave the house for the following reasons:
- Shopping for basic necessities;
- For one form of exercise a day;
- For any medical need or to support a vulnerable person;
- To travel to and from work when “absolutely necessary”
You can help vulnerable friends or relatives, however, this should be kept to a minimum and social distancing should be maintained at all times.
Where people are outside they should only be in a group of two or more if they are with people who live in the same household.
As a force we are ready and willing to take any necessary action to support this – but we anticipate that the majority of people will adhere to the guidelines and ensure that they are followed by friends and family.
In a statement earlier this week, Tony Wetton, Chair of Derbyshire Police Federation, urged people to stay home and save lives.
He said: “These are an unprecedented range of measures announced by the Prime Minister to lockdown the country to help save lives, to support our NHS and to protect key workers. It is really important to note that 1 infection prevented today prevents 36,000 cases in 6 weeks' time. Please do not mix with people from outside your own household until told it is safe to do so. We are in grave danger of the National Health Service being utterly overwhelmed and unable to help people in desperate need.
“I would urge everybody to recognise the severity of this situation and call on the public to play their part in helping us at this time of national crisis. A repeat of the scenes we saw at the weekend, with people completely ignoring the advice of the scientists and experts trying to get us through this crisis, will be disastrous for us all.”
Mr Wetton added: “I hope members of our communities listen to the advice and stay in their homes unless it is absolutely necessary for them to go out.
“As a force, protecting the public is our priority. We’ll continue to receive regular calls, and for us to be able to maintain services to our communities we need everybody on board and doing their bit. This is about saving lives and supporting our NHS, I ask that the public gives us their support in this time of crisis.”
You can read the latest guidance by following UK government and nhs.uk on Facebook to keep up with the latest announcement and to learn more about the new instructions.
Officers will be out on patrol, however, where people witness clear and obvious breaches of these guidelines they should be passed to the force via a private message on Facebook or direct message Twitter which can then be allocated to officers.
