Businesses warned over renting of family homes
Amber Valley Borough Council is becoming increasingly concerned about the practice of businesses renting family homes and then using them as overnight accommodation for their employees, to save money on hotel or other accommodation.
The council has recently been made aware by a landlord and agent of a normal family home being rented by a single person but then being occupied by contractors employed by a company, with bunkbeds provided throughout the house, far in excess of what would be considered reasonable and suitable.
This follows another serious incident of a kitchen fire in a property where fire exits had been blocked. Thankfully no one was hurt. This property had been rented as a single occupancy but was sublet to a company which then used the property for their employees. In this case the property was prohibited by the council through enforcement action.
On both occasions the landlord had no knowledge of the letting arrangement.
Family homes are not set up for this type of use, especially with fire safety in mind and can be really dangerous, especially if employees cook separately.
These cases often come to light due to parking complaints, often if a large number of vans park near the property at night.
There are massive savings to be made for businesses, so the likelihood is that there will be more cases in the future.
The message is for both landlords and agents to be especially careful about knowing exactly who they are renting to and to make sure that appropriate checks are being put in place. If residents are aware that properties might be used in this way then please contact Amber Valley Borough Council.
