Number of children arrested in Derbyshire falls
The number of children arrested in Derbyshire has been reduced by 76 per cent in eight years.
Derbyshire Police arrested 994 boys and girls aged 17 and under in 2018. This compares to 1,038 in the previous year and 4,194 in 2010.
The Howard League for Penal Reform has published figures from across the country this week, showing that Derbyshire is in line with the national trend.
The League states that each contact a child has with the criminal justice system drags them deeper into it, leading to more crime.
Superintendent Tracy Lewis, head of Criminal Justice, said: “We have reduced the number of child arrests by exploring different avenues when dealing with youngsters.
“This includes asking them and a suitable adult to speak to an officer voluntarily rather than under arrest, and by using local resolutions. This can involve young people making amends for any wrongdoing by apologising to the victim or carrying out appropriate work rather than being dealt with through the criminal justice system.”
