Milling Experience Gained At Heage Windmill
We were delighted to welcome Martyn Holden, from Belper, to join our milling team as a ‘Miller for the Day’ – and he milled! He met up at the mill at 9am with Tim Castledine, John Ward and Anthony Sharp, part of our milling team, who were on duty to improve our stock of the much-loved flour while the wind was blowing. John took Martyn up into the cap of the Windmill at Heage and taught him something about how a windmill is prepared for the operation.
The team were soon milling and meal was pouring down the spout. Some was diverted into the dresser and white flour was separated from the bran. Martyn was able to participate under supervision in most of the operations involved in producing white flour. Towards the end of the session he was able to produce a bag of white flour that he had helped mill. As the day drew to a close Martyn then helped to ‘put the mill to bed’, as we say, making her safe and secure to leave.
Tim Castledine presented Martyn with his certificate of ‘Milling Experience’ and Martyn commented he had really enjoyed the day and would hope to come again in the near future.
