Warning About Scam Telephone Calls
Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards is warning residents about a suspected bogus telephone call from a business claiming to be ‘boiler maintenance’.
An elderly consumer in Breadsall had such a call. She is due a visit next week from a bone fide business for a boiler service. The caller said they were in the area and wanted to come today. The consumer would have to pay cash and they couldn’t take a card. She was told all the radiators would need bleeding at a cost of £160. This is normally free as part of her service. Fortunately the lady was not taken in and said she would wait until the arranged appointment next week.
Trading Standards would urge residents never to respond to cold callers, and not to give any information/ bank details in response to such calls. The public can register for free with the Telephone Preference Service at www.tpsonline.org.uk or by calling 0845 070 0707, to help reduce such calls.
If you have concerns over a trader who has cold called you on the phone you can report it to Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06. Alternatively consumers can contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at www.actionfraud.police.uk
