A Lion and a Parrot help local Choir Raise Money for Children's Cancer Charity
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will receive hundreds of pounds after an entertaining show performed by Alfreton Male Voice Choir alongside 'Squalk' the parrot, 'Leni' the lion the 'Sagalouts' and nationally known trumpeter John Barker.
The 'You'll Never Walk Alone' show played to a packed Post Mill Centre at South Normanton. The show’s title represented the well know anthem but more importantly the support given to families of children with life limiting conditions. Choir chairman, Reverend Derrick Hesketh said, "It’s always a great feeling to be part of the Choir and entertain but to do it knowing we are helping the work of Bluebell Wood Hospice is a real privilege."
Alfreton Male Voice Choir’s songs were varied, including a romantic piece 'Let It Be Me,' and choral piece, 'For the Beauty of the Earth.' 'Squalk' the parrot made his appeared on a chorister’ shoulder in 'The Song of the Jolly Roger' whilst Leni the two-metre-long soft toy lioness, sprawled across two choristers during, 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight.' Six Choir guys then morphed into the colourful 'Sagalouts' skiffle group lead by Mick Mularkey, all donning colourful waistcoats, long flowing wigs and playing washboard, tea chest base, ukulele and guitar to perform songs to which the audience willingly sang, laughed and toe tapped including 'Sweet Sixteen and 'Roll Out the Barrel.’
Local man, trumpeter John Barker 'wowed' the audience with a number of pieces including 'The Circle of Life' and 'Cavalleria rusticana' from an Italian opera. At the end of the show, John and Choir came together performing the haunting, 'High on A Hill' The evening closed with Choir, trumpet and audience performing, ‘You'll Never Walk Alone’ celebrating the wonderful work of Bluebell Wood Children’s hospice.
Choir Chairman Derrick said, "What a fantastic end to a fantastic show. Hearing Choir, trumpet and audience performing 'You'll never Walk Alone' was really moving and I know we will have raised a hundreds of pounds for Bluebell Wood Hospice. Thanks everyone."v
