Council considers Belper North Mills backing
The future of the museum and visitor centre at Belper North Mill will be given a major boost if Amber Valley Borough Council’s cabinet supports a recommendation to provide additional funding when it meets on 30 October 2019.
The North Mill Trust recently wrote to the council asking for assurance over the council’s grant support while it concluded negotiations over the future lease of the building.
The cabinet has been recommended to approve further funding for the trust of £47,600 for the financial years 2020/21 and 2021/22. This will allow the trust to continue operating as a museum and visitor centre while it looks at ways to become more self-funded through new fund-raising initiatives, including:
- introducing new tours, focused on external areas of the mill;
- trialling a guided mini-bus tour throughout the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, in partnership with the Arkwright Society;
- launching a community lottery scheme;
- reviewing the local walks offer in conjunction with Belper Town Council;
- joint ticketing initiatives with local attractions; and
- campaigning for corporate sponsorship and developing a friends’ society.
Commenting on the recommendation to provide more funding, the council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, Councillor Ben Bellamy, said "The Belper North Mill Trust provides a valuable service in keeping the heart of the World Heritage Site open to the public and we must support their contribution to the tourism offering of the local area, which, in turn, is beneficial to the local economy."
