Backroom NHS data analysts earn a spotlight as winners in NHS Extra Mile Awards!

Published on Tuesday 22 October 2019

A team of number crunchers more used to working behind the scenes providing data to help the NHS deliver the best patient care found themselves in the spotlight at awards run by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust.

The team of data experts, based at Alfreton Primary Care Centre, was named non-clinical team of the year 2019. The award comes in recognition of the team’s expertise in providing a vast range of information to help the health trust to analyse its performance in providing good patient care and understand where improvements can be made.

Under team leader James Chisholm, head of information and performance, the team was praised for its “responsiveness, approach and willingness” to create data-sets which help to inform decision-making about patient services based on reliable accurate data. James added: “I’m extremely proud of the team, we’ve come a long way in the last twelve months.”

The team was nominated by a huge number of clinical colleagues as a sign of the value placed on the work they do quietly in the background in supporting frontline care. Representatives of the team are pictured receiving their award from Prem Singh, chairman, and Kaye Burnett, non-executive director, at the trust’s Extra Mile Awards, held at Derby’s Roundhouse on Friday 18 October.

The award nomination read: “In many cases the team has developed methodologies to create visual platforms on business intelligence systems that update data routinely and automatically from source systems.  They have taken time to co-design these platforms with the services to ensure that the presentation of the data is in a format that the services themselves find user-friendly.”

Prem Singh, chairman of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “These awards are one of the most important events in our calendar, where we publicly demonstrate the value and importance of recognising all the fantastic work that goes on each day for patients. It is a chance for us to honour, thank and celebrate our amazing staff.”

The Extra Mile Awards, now in their sixth year, are open to the 4,300 staff of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. There were more than 400 nominations and 60 finalists for the 2019 awards. These are individuals and teams who have been nominated by others for their dedication and caring.

Information about all the award winners is available on the Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust’s website at: http://www.dchs.nhs.uk/. The awards were sponsored by corporate partners working with the trust.
