Have an autumnal adventure this half term with the National Trust in Derbyshire

Published on Tuesday 22 October 2019

Find inspiration for October half term with the National Trust’s events and activities in Derbyshire.

Celebrate the fiery shades of autumn with walks and trails, experience nature wows in the gardens and parkland or join in with fun, seasonal activities to mark this special time of year.

Every visit to the National Trust this autumn helps Europe’s largest conservation charity care for the special places near you for years to come.

Don’t forget to share the favourite memories from your visit @NTMidlands or #NTMidlands.

Calke Abbey

Celebrate harvest at Calke Abbey this half term. Pop into Squirt’s Stable for autumn crafts and activities every day of the school holiday and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for fallen conkers on a walk in the 600-acre parkland. Get your cameras ready for photos of the wildlife that calls Calke home, including the beautiful red and fallow deer.

If you’re bursting with energy, the natural play area at Calke Explore is open all year round for woodland adventures. Or, if you want to get in the mood for Halloween, explore the spooky tunnel underneath Calke’s house.

Ilam Park, Dovedale and the White Peak

Walking through woodlands rich in colour and wildlife, feeling the crisp autumn air against your face and the crunch of leaves underfoot are just some of the things to be found on autumn adventures at Ilam Park. There are plenty of guided walks for our visitors to join and learn more about this beautiful area.

For families planning their days out, join a Hedgehog Trail from 26 October – 3 November and discover more about these curious creatures.

Kedleston Hall

Kedleston Hall is teaming up with Surtal Arts this half term with a series of events in celebration of Diwali. Visitors will have the chance to take part in the making of a giant Rangoli with renowned artist Ranbir Kaur.

Rangoli are colourful patterns, usually created using flowers or coloured powder. At Kedleston, the giant Rangoli will be created using natural materials gathered from the parkland such as fallen leaves, conkers, acorns and twigs, people of all ages are invited to contribute to the Rangoli on 28 – 31 October, and the finished Rangoli will be displayed on 2 and 3 November.

Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood

This October half term, visitors to Sudbury can make some spooky friends out of pine cones for Halloween, put on their wellies and join the welly-wandering trail, or get creative with crafty fun in the Creation Station.

If you want to make the most of the season, then head outdoors for an autumnal walk around the Sudbury lake and grounds then pop inside to take a trip down memory lane in the Museum of Childhood. Come back on Bonfire Night for a magical evening of fairy tale storytelling while you toast marshmallows over the warming fire pit.

Hardwick

There are some faces hiding in the woods at Hardwick this autumn. Head down to Lady Spencer’s walk and follow the Guardians of Hardwick trail to see if you can spot them all. What can you see, hear, feel and smell on the way? The Guardians of Hardwick trail continues in the Hall so there are lots more faces to find. Keep a lookout for the tapestries and doorways. The fun doesn’t stop there; join in and create your own autumnal weaved tapestry to take home.

The Hardwick parkland at autumn is a great place to catch falling leaves or squelch in the mud in your wellies. Or if you wish to escape the rain, step into the Elizabethan Hall with three floors to explore before tucking into a warming treat in the restaurant.

Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors

Nature displays a beautiful and rich array of colours during the autumn and presents new opportunities to see wildlife. Go on a crisp and refreshing autumnal adventure at Longshaw where you are sure to discover wondrous wildlife moments. Find moments to pause and be still and admire the wide variety of fungi on the ground or the regal red deer roaming the moors. Families planning their autumn adventures for this October, can join in the Halloween half term fun at Longshaw and discover creepy tales and mysterious riddles as they explore the Spooky Trail through the eerie woods.
