Anti-Hate Message Brought To Life In Youth Drama Event

Published on Sunday 13 October 2019

School pupils from across Derbyshire are poised to take part in an interactive event to raise awareness of hate crime during a national campaign week.

Restorative justice charity Remedi is hosting a Step Up Beat Hate workshop with volunteers from its specialised support service for young victims of crime, Got Your Back, and other partner agencies, to ensure young people know how and where to report hate crime and access the help they need to recover from their experiences.

The event, which is being held on Monday 14th October from 9am until 12pm and will be attended by Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa, will be attended by young people in years' seven to nine and coincides with the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week across the UK which runs from October 12th to 19th.

Hate Crime Awareness Week aims to unite individuals and communities to stand together in solidarity against hate crime and to remember those lost and those needing support as a result of the crime as well as promoting educational opportunities to prevent hate crime.

The event is taking place at Kombat Kinetics Boxing Gym in Werburgh Street, Derby, and will include a range of creative activities as well as an interactive drama session.

Mr Dhindsa said: "This is an opportunity for young people to learn about the impact of hate crime and very importantly what they should do if they become a victim, in a fun and creative way.

"With all our experts and support volunteers available at this event, anyone who is concerned about hate crime or is currently suffering in silence will be able to confide in a trusted adult to get the advice and help they need.

"We are expecting a big turnout and I'm very much looking forward to hearing young people's solutions to preventing hate crime in what is a very important awareness week."

Charlotte Baldwin, Manager for Remedi in Derbyshire said: "This event has been organised with young people in Derby who are passionate about raising awareness of Hate Crime, the reporting agencies and the support that Got Your Back provides to young victims. We will be encouraging the young people to unite and pledge how they will Step Up and Beat Hate within their own communities, schools and peer groups. It is critical that we use this week in October to ensure that every young person knows who they can speak to if they are a victim of this crime."
