Schools Invited To Bid From Derbyshire County Council Fund To Promote Cycling And Healthy Lifestyles

Published on Friday 11 October 2019

Schools will be invited to bid for a share of £376,839 Derbyshire County Council has made available to encourage more pupils to cycle to lessons or other green travel and wellbeing initiatives.

The council’s Cabinet today (Thurs 10 Oct) approved the fund for schools to bid from to build cycle storage or develop other projects which promote low carbon travel and health benefits.

Many schools already encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school as part of their ongoing health improvement and environmental initiatives but teachers identified that one of the barriers to cycling was the lack of secure storage for bikes.

Following approval by Cabinet today schools will be invited to bid for funding up to an individual project cost of £20,000.

The council will also consider requests from schools who do not require cycle storage for alternative projects of up to £20,000 that fit in with its sustainable travel, health or wellbeing priorities.

The money is part of a £776,839 Healthy Pupil Capital Fund (HPCF) awarded to the council by the Department for Education last year to support health improvement initiatives in schools.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “We’re keen to support schools in their efforts to encourage pupils to walk or cycle to school which have many potential benefits including less parking and congestion around school gates improving air quality and road safety.

“These benefits also fit in with the council’s own priorities as set out in our climate change manifesto to support and promote the development of environmentally-friendly low carbon ways of travelling to protect our local environment and encourage healthy lifestyles.

“We welcomed the HPCF Government funding last year which allows us to come up with ideas to work with and support schools with initiatives like this and I’m very pleased that our Cabinet is to consider the proposal.

“While we may all understand the benefits of behaviour change like encouraging children to cycle to school instead of being driven, it’s also important to acknowledge there may sometimes be obstacles in the way which a bit of thought, planning and funding can break down and this project proposes to do just that.”
