Council commits to additional CCTV cameras

Published on Saturday 3 August 2019

A 33% increase in the number of CCTV cameras operated by Amber Valley Borough Council was agreed at a meeting of the full council on 24 July.

Members resolved to add four new cameras – one each for Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley town centres – following a review of CCTV coverage in the borough. A needs assessment is currently underway to help determine the best locations for the additional cameras.

Commented, Councillor Fay Atkinson, deputy cabinet member for community safety: “Our CCTV cameras are used to prevent and detect crime, maintain public order and reduce anti-social behaviour, including nuisance and vandalism. As the cameras are monitored 24/7 there also is the opportunity for early intervention in some instances.

“We know that this type of security provides reassurance and a sense of safety for members of the public, and so we hope the additional cameras will be well-received by local communities.”
