Council's support for advice service
Financial support has been committed by Amber Valley Borough Council to a welfare rights advice service providing valuable help to people in the county.
At a meeting on 24 July, the council agreed to provide a grant of £20,000 per year, for the next three years, to Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre.
The centre offers a mixture of open door drop-in and telephone advice. Its independent welfare rights advice and representation is free, and it also campaigns for the rights of those who are unemployed, on a low income or sick, injured or disabled by their work.
It currently operates from two locations in Amber Valley:
Alfreton House, Alfreton
Tuesdays: 9am – 12 noon
Wednesdays and Thursdays: 9am -12 noon and 1pm - 4pm
Somercotes Parish Hall
Mondays: 1.30pm – 4pm
Commenting on the grant award, leader of the council, Chris Emmas-Williams, said: “Derbyshire Unemployed Workers’ Centre continues to do excellent work on behalf of many of the more vulnerable members of our communities. Last year they handled 625 cases and secured £568,000 in payments for Amber Valley residents. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to maintaining their much-needed services.”
