Amber Valley Borough Council's commitment to become carbon-neutral

Published on Saturday 27 July 2019

Committed to addressing the issue of climate change, Amber Valley Borough Council has declared its aim to become carbon-neutral by 2030.

At a meeting of the full council on 24 July it was agreed to declare a 'climate emergency' and to call on the UK Government to provide the powers and resources to make the 2030 target possible.

The council also committed to work with partners across the county and region to deliver this new goal through all the relevant strategies and include strong references to this emergency in the new Local Plan. It will also ensure that all our town and parish councils are made aware and suggest that they also consider a similar commitment to this emergency.

At the same meeting a motion was passed noting the controversy about the extraction of shale gas and coal bed methane, and the potential local environmental impacts.

The motion concluded that the council "does not welcome fracking, will oppose fracking in our area and declares Amber Valley a 'Frack Free Zone'."

Commented Leader of the Council, Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams: “We believe it is very important that everyone plays their part in raising awareness of, and tackling, serious environmental issues. As a council we have an important role to play and will be working hard to identify and deliver tangible initiatives in our bid to becoming carbon-neutral.”

All documents from the full council meeting held on 24 July can be viewed on our committee documents page.
