Create An Awesome Alien As Part Of The Summer Reading Challenge
Children are being encouraged to enter this year’s Summer Reading Challenge colouring competition and draw an awesome alien to win a family day out.
The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, being run by Derbyshire County Council’s libraries, is Space Chase, which is why the colouring competition theme is `Awesome Aliens’.
The competition winner will be presented with a family ticket to Haddon Hall, which can be used to admit two adults and three children to the historic house and gardens.
The competition is open to children aged four to 12 years old and they are encouraged to create weird and wonderful aliens which will be used to promote the Summer Reading Challenge in displays at libraries across Derbyshire.
To submit entries children can hand them in to their local library on or before Saturday 10 August and the winner will be informed on Friday 16 August.
The entries will be put on a `Here Come The Aliens’ display in the children’s library at Chesterfield Library on Saturday 17 August, where the winner will be officially announced and presented with their prize at 11am.
Second and third prizes of book tokens and books will also be presented at the event.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national programme open to children of all ages, who can sign up at their local library to take part.
Youngsters are challenged to read six books of their choice over the school holidays and those completing the mission are rewarded with medals and certificates.
This year’s Space Chase theme has been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
The Summer Reading Challenge, which this year runs until Saturday 7 September, is aimed at encouraging children to read for pleasure and use libraries over the long school holidays, as well as helping to prevent any dip in literacy skills.
Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “Encouraging children to pick up a book they want to read, rather than telling them they have to read something, is how youngsters develop a lifelong love of reading, and it can help with their development and education. Most importantly, the Summer Reading Challenge and the colouring competition is fun, and it’s free.”
