New grant scheme launched to shine a light on hate crime

Published on Tuesday 23 July 2019

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa announced the launch of a new funding stream to help raise awareness of hate crime during a national campaign.

The Commissioner, who is national lead for hate crime on behalf of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC), has set aside grants of up to £500 each for innovative projects which shine a spotlight on hate crime during Hate Crime Awareness Week 2019, which takes place between October 12 and 19.

The cash is available for small, micro-projects which might not otherwise have an opportunity to secure funding. Bids will be reviewed by the Multi-Faith Centre in Derby.

Successful projects will publicise the different ways to report hate crime in the county and sign post to the various care services available to support victims, including the specialist Hate Crime Victim Support Services, commissioned by the PCC as part of his overarching CORE (Cope and Recover) Derbyshire victims service.

They will also be required to promote the Commissioner's national social media campaign #NO2HATE, which last year saw PCCs, Chief Constables and justice partners across the country standing in solidarity against hate.

Commenting on the new fund, Mr Dhindsa said: "Hate divides and destroys communities and it is the responsibility of us all to confront it.

"One of the ongoing challenges of policing hate crime is that many victims continue to suffer in silence. To fight the problem effectively, we need victims to report their experiences and one of the goals of this funding is to encourage more people to come forward.

"Hate Crime Awareness Week is a fantastic opportunity to support local projects which can raise awareness of this awful problem and give victims a clear pathway to support.

"We are serious about tackling hate crime in Derbyshire and we need victims to know how seriously we will take their experiences."

Organisations interested in applying for funding are required to complete a proposal form setting out an initial outline of their idea including costs.

Upon review of the proposals, shortlisted candidates may be asked for further information before a final decision is made.

Applications are being coordinated by the Derby Multi-Faith centre who are a lead partner in the new services to support victims of Hate. The Multi-Faith Centre will be working with other specialist organisations including LGBTplus, Disability Direct and Derbyshire Victims Services to deliver an integrated and holistic Hate Crime service.

The deadline to submit outline proposals is noon on 26th August 2019. Completed forms should be emailed to the Multi-Faith Centre at: mfc@derby.ac.uk
