The tram is one of the oldest exhibits at Crich, pre-dating the acquisition of the horse tram system by Sheffield Corporation in 1896.
The single deck, one horse tramcar was one of a batch of eight which were built for Sheffield Tramways Company. It weighed 29 cwt when built, cost £200 and could accommodate 16 passengers. It was originally used on the Brightside line and stabled, along with the horses at the Tinsley tram depot.
The tramcar started operating at Crich in 1963, but since 1984 has been used on a restricted basis (around six times a year) over 33 seasons.
Laura Waters, Curator at the National Tramway Museum, said:
“It is always a great day when Joseph is at the Museum to pull our horse tram. He is such a wonderful addition to the team and probably the most popular crew member. Visitors get a special experience being able to take a trip on the horse tram and then ride on the electric trams, which replaced the horse trams.”
The final two horse tram days at Crich will be on Sunday 8th September and Monday 16th September, when the tram will operate between 11am and 4pm, with a break for Joseph between 1pm and 2pm.
