Car club launches in Derbyshire via NHS partnership

Published on Wednesday 17 July 2019

A new car club service is set to provide towns and communities in Derbyshire with 24/7 automated access to sustainable transport.

The new vehicles, which are available to the public, are being operated in partnership with Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust by Enterprise Car Club. The cars are parked at a number of the Trust’s hospitals and health centres and are now available to the general public as well as employees of the Trust.

The programme includes nine Ford Fiestas. Two are available in bays at Walton Hospital (Chesterfield) and one each at Babington (Belper), Clay Cross, Newholme (Bakewell) and Whitworth (Darley Dale) Hospitals. There are also cars at High Peak Halls, Repton Health Centre and the Ash Green Specialist Learning Disability Services Centre.

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust has used Enterprise Car Club for employee business travel for two years, helping to reduce its reliance on employees using their own cars for business trips as well as ensuring its drivers are in modern, well-maintained, low-emission vehicles. The Trust has already seen a reduction in CO2 emissions by two tonnes since using Enterprise Car Club*.

Mark Armstrong-Read, sustainability lead at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, comments: “We initially chose Enterprise as it is a recognised expert in business mobility and we were keen to encourage our employees to use more efficient and sustainable vehicles for business travel. It also means they didn’t have to use their own cars for work trips, which many were reluctant to do.

“Our staff mainly hire the cars for clinical use, visiting patients and travelling between health centres. Those journeys tend to take place between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, so we’ve been able to expand the programme to also provide more transport options for the people and businesses near our locations.

“Our NHS Trust plays an important role in community healthcare in Derbyshire and now we’re helping to provide community transport as well.”

Enterprise Car Club is one of the most convenient ways to get motoring quickly. Individuals and businesses can sign up and be driving within a few hours, booking and accessing the vehicle with a smartphone app.

In addition to the nine cars located in Derbyshire, membership to Enterprise Car Club allows access to a growing network of 1,100 on-street vehicles available for rent 24/7, 365 days of the year, in more than 130 cities, towns and communities across the UK. Many Enterprise Car Club vehicles are located at transport hubs or railway stations to make it easier to travel around the UK using public transport.

Dan Gursel, managing director of Enterprise Car Club, adds: “A car club is all about providing seamless access 24/7 to vehicles for a local community, so we were delighted when Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust agreed to extend access to its Enterprise Car Club vehicles to other people living and working in Derbyshire.

“As a business, Enterprise focuses on a hyperlocal service, and our vehicles and branches are often located in areas where there are no other rental car options. In addition to our six rental car branches already in Derbyshire, these nine automated car club vehicles are ideal for people who need to access a car. They can be booked with an app and opened with a smart phone, so you can literally be on your way in seconds.

“They’re a low-cost, low-emission alternative that will suit a lot of individuals and businesses in the region.”

Enterprise Car Club membership is available to drivers 19 years or older and costs from £10 per year. Vehicles are available from £5.00 per hour including VAT and 21 pence per mile. Residents and businesses in Derbyshire can sign up by calling 0345 266 9290 or at www.enterprisecarclub.co.uk using the first annual membership code DCHS10**.
