Families invited to pay their respects as Heanor church hosts remembrance event

Published on Friday 5 July 2019

A Heanor church is joining forces with a town funeral firm to hold a remembrance service for families who want to pay tribute to loved ones who have died during the past year.

St Lawrence Church, in Market Place, is holding the event in conjunction with Gillotts Funeral Directors on Sunday, July 14, so that people can take time out to remember their much-loved friends and family.

It is the first time that the event has been held and church’s vicar, the Reverend Lisa Shemilt, says that it will allow people to share their time and stories at what can be a difficult time of year.

It will feature readings and hymns and will last for about 20 minutes, with refreshments and flowers supplied by Gillotts.

She said: “People understandably talk about Christmas being a tough time of year for people who have lost a loved one, but the summertime, when other people are happy enjoying the warm weather and going on holiday, can make it a lonely time for them too.

“That’s why we decided to hold this service in partnership with Gillotts, so that they can have a safe space within our church to spend time with others in the same situation, whether they want to talk about their grief or not.

“I understand that many people will have had humanist or secular funerals, but I’d like to think that they consider the door to the church is open to them if they are in need of comfort.”

Gillotts holds its own memorial service at Christmas, when its five branches invite families to a service held at St Mary’s Church in Greasley, but Anthony Topley, a funeral director at the Abbott Street firm, said they were happy to assist with St Lawrence’s service.

He said: “We know from our Christmas service how people benefit from coming together to reflect on their bereavement and so we have sent out invites to all of our families who have recently arranged funerals with us.

“It’s unusual to hold a service like this in the summer, but it takes months to get over a bereavement and for many people, summer can be as difficult a time as any other when you have lost someone close.”

The event will begin with refreshments at 5.30pm, with the service taking place from 6pm.
