Crich Tramway Village - The Mobile Post Box - Mail by Tram

Published on Wednesday 19 June 2019

Crich Tramway Village’s new exhibition ‘The Mobile Post Box – Mail by Tram’ is open to visitors from 21st June 2019 and will run until November 2020.

The exhibition which has been curated by the Museum’s Curatorial Assistant, Hannah Bale and Librarian, Robert Morris, will reveal how in the early 20th Century tramcars became mobile post boxes, carrying and delivering letters and parcels. It explores the challenges that had to be overcome in order to provide these services and examines some of the tramways which were successful in developing a profitable postal service.

The exhibition is part of the Museum’s ongoing programme of temporary exhibitions, which allows visitors to explore and see more of the collections the Museum holds and reveals different aspects of the country’s tramway heritage.

More than 30 items from the Museums stored collections, which relate to postal services and the tramways will be included. Items such as post boxes that were hung on the tramcars, receipt books, service stickers and examples of trams on stamps through the years will all be on display.

In addition to these original artefacts there will be a fascinating display of the range of items which could and couldn’t be carried on the tramcars; research shows a myriad of items that could be carried on the trams, and there are definitely some interesting items which might surprise visitors whilst exploring the exhibition.

The Museum is also pleased to be working with the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester, who will be lending their Manchester Corporation Tramways parcel trolley, which will take centre stage in the exhibition. Crich Tramway Villages’ Librarian, Robert Morris said:

“We are really pleased to be working with our colleagues at the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester, to bring their beautiful parcel trolley in to feature centrally in our new exhibition. It is great that this piece of tramway postal service history has survived and can be shared with our visitors.”
