Rotary Amber Valley help send a teenager on volunteering expedition to Nepal
At a recent meeting of Rotary Amber Valley members were taken on an interesting ‘trip’ to Nepal by teenager Jacob Davidson of Amber Valley.
As part of the Rotary objective to support young people locally, Jacob was financially supported by Rotary as he raised funds to join other young people on an expedition to Nepal with Raleigh International.
Jacob, who came to the Rotary meeting with proud parents Natalie and George, successfully applied to Raleigh International. However, Jacob had to raise funds and was helped by Rotary Amber Valley. Rotarian Ian Holliday said, “Supporting Jacob demonstrates Rotary commitment to help young people to unlock their potential, develop their skills and broaden their horizons.”
Raleigh International, started by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, supports and encourages young people to have an impact where it matters most. Expedition volunteers help empower local communities by improving people’s access to safe water and sanitation, building stronger communities and protecting the world’s resources.
Jacob used a PowerPoint presentation to tell Rotararians of his two-month expedition involving Trekking with an international group in the Himalayan mountains, then staying in two village communities helping to install fresh water and sanitation systems.
Jacob said, “I will have a lasting memory of both the people in Nepal but also group members from different parts of the world and I have a better perspective that, no matter the circumstances, people can be happy if in the right mindset.”
Rotarian Ian Holliday said, “Rotary Amber Valley help for young people can be in the form of help for youth organisations or support for planning projects at home or abroad including planning a gap-year expedition to assist aid projects in the third-world. If you would like to talk to us get in touch through our Facebook page or website.”
