Ripley 'Beat Sweep' operation targets anti-social behaviour, road safety and crime

Published on Wednesday 29 May 2019

Officers from the Ripley Town Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have taken part in a week long beat sweep in the area to target anti-social behaviour, road safety and crime.

Police officers, PCSOs, Special Constables and partnership agencies worked together to target issues which were highlighted as local concerns during the week of action, which started on Monday, May 13.

The initiative has taken place as part of the Safer Together campaign, which has so far seen several events held across Derbyshire to engage with local communities and help raise awareness of new investment in the force, which will see 120 new posts created working to improve police presence in neighbourhoods and bolster investigations.

The investment came after consultation with the public revealed they were willing to pay extra in council tax to fund an increase in police resources in neighbourhoods. Recruitment to the new roles is under way with posts all due to be in place by the end of July.

Increased police patrols and crime prevention events were held in the town during the week, where officers from our local Safer Neighbourhood policing team offered security items provided by the Amber Valley Borough Council Community Safety Partnership.

During the patrols, our team were joined by officers from the Amber Valley Borough Council Community Safety Partnership, and park staff, and they targeted areas where we have had reports of anti-social behaviour and discarded drug related items, which were cleared up.

Two people were found to be drinking alcohol and in breach of a Public Spaces Protection Order at Crossley Park, and they were moved on from the area.

Our licensing team carried out visits to pubs and off licences, to advise them about their responsibilities and to encourage them to check for identification, and licensing officers from Amber Valley Borough Council carried out checks on taxi and private hire vehicles in the area.

Officers also carried out road safety checks in Ripley, with two drivers caught using a mobile phone, and 15 people who were not wearing seatbelts.

Activities during the week were supported by a number of our volunteer Special Constables and student officers, who alongside their colleagues made a number of arrests of people who were wanted for offences or on warrant from the courts.

A training day was also organised to bring together our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and other agencies we work with to encourage closer partnership working and problem solving within our communities.

Inspector Dave Parker, of the Amber Valley Local Policing Unit, said: “We carried out the beat sweep, week of action in Ripley which was all about visible local policing and problem solving with our partners. It is about tackling issues that matter to our communities at a local level, while also addressing some key areas of risk and threat.

“The week was a great success and we hope that the beat sweep will also send a clear message to the whole community that crime and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”
