Camp Disco - A gloriously fun family festival in the Peaks

Published on Thursday 23 May 2019

Camp Disco #5 is back with a bang for a fifth year of family revelry on 21st – 23rd June.  Freshly located to beautiful rolling meadows in Alfreton, Camp Disco provides the perfect stomping ground for a weekend of electrifying music, family tomfoolery and summer solstice festivities. It’s all the best bits of a family festival, a knees-up and a camping holiday rolled into one glorious weekend. Performers include The Allergies, DJ Format, Andy H, Black Beacon Sound, DJ Jamie Anderson, The Coolbeans Roadshow, Winston Hazel and many more

This welcoming and inclusive festival originated from a family and friends camping weekend complete with sound system and this relaxed attitude is evident in the unwavering sense of community.  You’re never more than one person away from a new friend to enjoy a pint with and the site is small enough that kids can go free range. At just £70 for an adult ticket and £25 for a child, it goes to show that you don’t need to throw money at a festival to have a good time.  There’s ample space for quiet family camping, eco-loos and solar showers and Trikes 4 Transport to do all the heavy lifting between car and campsite.

Camp Disco plays host to a feast of lip smacking live music and dj’s to sate the soul.  The Allergies will be headlining the party with their irresistible vintage licks and booty shaking beats - since forming in 2012 on Jalapeño Records, this Bristol DJ duo have torn out their dynamic mashup of funk, soul and hip hop to captive audiences and have stacked up accolades along the way.  DJ Format also brings his boundary-crossing selection of polished block-party beats, 70s funk loops and bbq breaks to the dance floor.  And joining the party, Andy H will bring the buzz with his unique turntable skills.

The Allergies

Black Beacon Sound are an eclectic, energetic record label based in Sheffield and they will be curating the Dance Tent this year;  whether you’re looking for some hip-twitching funk or shoulder-shaking hip-hop, the most deviant disco or the most thunderous techno, Black Beacon Sound are going to ensure the grooves reel you in.

Seminal DJ Jamie Anderson will be surfing the wave with his innovative techno and house grooves alongside Winston Hazel; legendary patriarch of the Sheffield bassline movement and granddaddy of The Forgemasters.  Fat modern beats and rich soulful vocals are Grinny Grandad’s trademark sound, creating an infectious brand of Ghetto Funk subterranean pop to vibrate your tail feathers.  Joining them on the bill is Audiomission, bringing the vibes with his Bristol heavy hybrid of cutting edge D&B, roots and dub; the block rocking beats of Buba King will be igniting the dance floor and The Cool Beans Roadshow will provide the anarchy.

Winston Hazel

For a more family friendly vibe, The Circus Tent is the venue with all the treats. With workshops for kids run by the Emily Rose Circus and cabaret performances to inspire all budding performers, it’s also the hub for the deeply competitive fancy dress parade and competition on Saturday night.  The theme?  Dead Famous: channel your inner celebrity ghost to claim the fancy dress crown! For frustrated rock gods, the Cuthbert Baines Lipsync Throwdown is there for your gratification. Enjoy seeing your competitors disappear in a cloud of dust at the Family sports day.

Slow the pace with some yoga or explore the wooded glade after dark by moonlight and twinkling lights.  To mark the summer solstice, there will be a communal fire and a ceremony to celebrate the  longest day. Nourishment for the body as well as the soul will be provided by the Thali Truck, expert purveyors of irresistible vegan Indian food and Sunshine Pizzas will be baking pizzas on site to satisfy the urge for carbs and cheese.

Festival organiser Si Mclean said: “Everything is being notched up a level this year as the new site allows us to break out and completely go wild! We now have loads more space to dance barefoot, scream and welcome the sun back into your life during the solstice.”

Camp Disco is bursting at the seams with good Northern vibes and fun friendly faces. It's time to dust off that disco ball and prepare to be dead famous.. Roll on June 21st!
