Tractors Visit Heage Windmill
It was a cool but dry day at Heage windmill on Sunday 5th May when a host of tractors and other vintage machines arrived well before the start time of 11-00am.
While many were completed restored some were in their farmyard glory and around sixty machines lined up near the mill. There was a wide variety of makers represented but outstanding were three machines from afar – Australia and the USA, two gleaming steam engines and an assortment of stationary engines, all in steam. Favourite for the children was a working scale model steam engine with a trailer behind. Surprise arrivals were an ancient Ford police car and a wartime jeep – in fact there was something on parade to catch every one’s eye.
The winner of the Tractor day certificate and trophy for the ‘Best Turned Out’ machine was Mr Joe Watson from nearby Shirland. It was his first visit to the mill and he was overjoyed by the fact that he had won with his Ferguson 590.
Meanwhile the six sails of the 222 year old windmill turned majestically in the background whilst many people enjoyed guided tours and learnt how her machinery produced flour. Event organiser Lynn Allen said’ It’s been a great day and the number of tractors was amazing – we are so glad they came to Heage’. All profits from the day will go to upkeep and maintenance of the windmill.
The windmill will be open during 2019 (11-00am to 4-00pm) every weekend from
April 6th until the end of October. Large, free, car park!
