Families Help Develop Website To Promote Services For Children And Young People With Disabilities

Published on Friday 22 March 2019

A website which helps families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities find all the information they need in one place has been updated and relaunched by Derbyshire County Council.

The original ‘Derbyshire Local Offer’ website was developed with the help of parents, carers and their children and has been well-used as a source of information about a wide range of relevant services and support since it was launched in 2014.

Since then, changes in the way people prefer to search for information and the advance of social media mean the council has reviewed the site, again using feedback from the people who use it.

The new-look site www.localoffer.derbyshire.gov.uk features clearly marked sections, an improved search function by area, service or subject with an ability to filter results and direct links to various organisation’s social media accounts.

It also has other sections including information about free courses and training, lists of local support groups for parents, their other children, families and carers, details of leisure events, places to go and things to do plus support for professionals.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “The Derbyshire Local Offer website brings together a wide range of useful information for the parents, carers, families and brothers and sisters of children and young people with special needs and disabilities in one place which can be accessed at any time at home or while out and about on a phone or tablet.

“It’s been popular ever since we launched it five years ago and we’ve been listening to users to make sure it continues to provide the support they need with safe and up-to-date content.

“We’ve worked with parents, carers and young people with disabilities who’ve told us what’s important to them and we’ve added some new features they said would be helpful.

“I hope families like the improvements we’ve made and we’d be interested to hear what people think about the new website.”

As well as offering a helpful search facility for a wide range of services, the website also advises parents and carers how to access them and whether there are any special criteria. There is also information about events for carers and other children in the family who may need support plus an education section where users can find out about the support available for children and young people with additional needs as well as lots of helpful advice and information about childcare and health services.

Users can also search for nurseries, schools or colleges as well as get helpful advice on choosing a school, home education, applying for a bursary and school transport.

Other sections include preparing young people with special needs for adulthood with information on getting work, careers advice and housing.

People can take a look at the at the new website and leave feedback at www.localoffer.derbyshire.gov.uk
